Safety for our families. Education that gives us all opportunity. Community pride and good citizenship. Clean air, along with healthy water and food. That’s the kind of America that all of its citizens want.

They’re not getting it, though. The U.S. holds titles of highest in inequality in many categories, for example, and ranging from income to access in medical care. And our political representatives, along with the lobbyists to whom they cater, seem to be the biggest obstacles to citizens achieving those wants.

But Americans still have opportunity to gear their country in the right direction, the Center for a New American Dream argues in its ?America the Possible? video (see it below). Yes, all should continue communication with elected officials, reminding them of these public wants and needs. There are many personal and even localized steps we can take to contribute to this dream, too, however.

The video is narrated by James Gustave Speth, a prominent environmental attorney who’s been advisor to two presidents and the United Nations. In his voice-over, Speth points out five key factors ? localize, plenitude, time, resonance with nature, and family-centered ? that citizens should focus on.

The Center for a New American Dream, founded in 1997, is a non-profit organization that hopes to help shift the U.S. away from its current ?hyper-consumer culture.?

?Our focus on the connections between consumption, quality of life, and the environment has made New Dream unique among environmental?and progressive groups.?
