You Won’t Believe How Many Americans Believe God Picks Super Bowl Winners

The belief that God is up in the heavens concerning himself with football games, dance recitals, and birthday parties is maddening to me — for reasons I don’t even have to go into here. But a new poll by the Public Religion Research Institute shows that many Americans — 26 percent, to be precise — totally give God credit for?Super Bowl wins.

Some stats from the telephone survey, via AJC.com:

  • 45% of minority Protestants believe God plays a role in determining who wins the Super Bowl.
  • 10% of people with no relgious affiliation think God cares about football enough to get involved. (WTF????)
  • 29% believe a football player who has been found guilty of domestic violence should be permanently banned from playing in the NFL.

An interesting stat from the same study shows that 73 percent of Americans say they would support a professional sports team that signs a gay or lesbian athlete. This is a nice surprise!

Do you know what this is? Just more American Exceptionalism. With all of the sheer pain and suffering in the world (universe?), God’s biggest priority is making us?happy by picking our team to win the Super Bowl….right?
