I know, I know. You guys tell me all the time to not write about these idiots. But I can’t help it! When I see Michele Bachmann’s?name (and stupid comments) cross my news feed, I smile gleefully and usually actually laugh out loud.
I like writing about her. She entertains me. And now??The latest is a doozy: she’s taking credit for America’s low gas prices.
Michele said this in 2012?during her ill-fated run for president:
?Under President Bachmann you will see gasoline come down below $2 a gallon again,? Bachmann said at a South Carolina rally in 2012. ?That will happen.?
Well guess what? We’re there! It happened. Gas is $2 per gallon in many areas. But it didn’t happen under a mythical President Bachmann.
She posted this to her Twitter feed, along with some retweets of other dummies who are touting her psychic powers.
Low gas prices aren’t something that a president can take credit for, of course, although the right wing is quick to blame Pres. Obama when gas prices are high. From the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute’s Michael Sivak:
?The reductions in these rates likely reflect fundamental, non-economic changes in society, such as increased telecommuting, increased use of public transportation, increased urbanization of the population, and changes in the age composition of drivers.?

However, energy analysts say that the real reason gas is cheap in the U.S. right now is largely due to a simple increase in supply and decrease in demand. In response to the flood of shale oil from U.S. and Canadian tar sands operations, Middle Eastern oil nations like Saudi Arabia have glutted the market with cheap oil in order to offset their losses as oil prices fall.
Furthermore, due to increase in sales of hybrid vehicles and increasing unpopularity of gas-guzzling SUVs, Americans are using less gas than ever to drive more miles.
