Five Really Stupid Things Said By U.S. Politicians

With 2014 almost over, one can’t help but wonder: What really are the most stupid things stated by politicians? Is it the “war on Christmas”? Or the constant denial of climate change?

Fortunately?for us,? Reddit user Alkenes_97 asked this very question on Reddit. We picked out the five quotes we believe to be the most hilariously stupid.
Some basic rules:
1. The quote has to be from the past five years.
2. The quote can’t just be funny, it has to be stupid.
3. Both parties are in this.

5. “Today, we have two Vietnams, side by side, North and South, exchanging and working.”
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) (Source)

Vietnam actually did consist of a North and South Vietnam. The war ended terribly: The communist North conquered the South, up to 3.1 million lives were lost, and the Vietnam war is seen as one of Americas failures on the global stage. However tragic this may be, Vietnam was united on ?2 July 1976 to form the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. One nation. The only other nation in the region Rep. Lee could be referring to would be Korea, indeed split into the communist Democratic People’s Republic (“North Korea”) and the westernized Republic of Korea (“South Korea”). However, they’re far from a peaceful collaboration.

4. “I think that gay marriage is something that should be between a man and a woman.”
Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-CA) (Source)

Sure this may have been a misunderstanding, but it sure is funny. Just to be clear: Unless referring to a “happy marriage”, the word “gay” is?synonymous with homosexual, or, as Dictionary.com defines it, as “of, relating to, or exhibiting sexual desire or behavior directed toward a person or persons of one’s own sex”. Gay marriage between a man and a woman simply can’t exist.

3. “Yeah, my fear is that the whole island [of Guam] will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize.”
Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) (Source)

Islands are actually sinking quite often. But usually not because of a military installation. Instead, they simply can’t withstand the rising sea levels and other dangers arising from climate change. To his credit though, he did suggest he was joking later; also, he battled ?Hepatitis C, causing him to lose his train of thought. And yes, it really derailed here.

2. ?Every barrel of oil that comes out of those sands in Canada is a barrel of oil that we don’t have to buy from a foreign source.”
Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX) (Source)

Dear Governor,
USAnotUSA
That’s all.

1. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”
Todd Akin (R-MO) (Source)

This statement clearly deserves to be on this list. It has everything a really stupid quote needs: It’s offensive, really confusing and fundamentally wrong. First of all, what does legitimate rape refer to? Rape as defined by law? Then what other kinds of rape are there? Are there categories?
That being said, of course there is no way the female body can shut “that whole thing” down. We’d highly suggest?politicians like him would read very basic information about how pregnancy works before making decisions for others in that field.
