Stories of Sexuality: My Conversation With Social Media Sensation Julian Serrano

I had the pleasure to chit chat with a social media star who is getting known for his famous booty. And no, it is not Nicki Minaj or JLo. It is the young and vivacious Julian Serrano. I asked him some questions that I have been dying to ask since I discovered him on Twitter. With a growing fan base which includes famous stars like Rupaul and having danced with singer Ciara, Julian is becoming more popular by the moment!

Me: Tell us what you identify as sexually, racially, and in terms of your gender identity.
Julian: I am a gay male, and I am Puerto Rican.

Me: Where were you born, and where did you grow up?
Julian: I was born and raised in Lorain, Oh, aka the middle of nowhere lol.

Me: Was your coming out process difficult? How do you feel your backgrounds and/or identities played a part in that process?
Julian: It really wasn’t difficult at all coming out. My family and friends had already assumed, so it was more of like a relief for them. I don’t think my background had any part in it. I believe my confidence allowed others to feel comfortable with me.

Me: Gay men have been criticized by some communities for their use of slang words that can be deemed offensive, especially to women. What are your thoughts on this?
Julian: Well, I have never heard of that, so I can’t really speak on this. But I believe generally, if anything, straight men are more to blame for that issue.

Me: You are widely known for your incredible ‘twerkin’ abilities (of which I am a huge fan by the way). Have you found that people label you as a certain kind of gay because of this? If so, what do they label you as?
Julian: Haha thank you. 🙂 Yes. I am definitely labeled as a “promiscuous” person, but what else would you expect? I would think the same.

Me: And do you sometimes feel that you do not fit these labels? Are there some aspects of your life (interests, traits, etc) that people might be surprised by?
Julian: Well of course I don’t fit that label.. It’s entertainment. But that’s just like Nicki Minaj hiding her ass or Kevin Hart not making jokes about people. Being comfortable within and having a high confidence within yourself is, what i feel, the most important trait to being successful.

Me: I know that you LOVE Nicki Minaj. Some people have said that gay men adore female icons because they actually yearn to be them. This is obviously shallow and misguided in most situations. But could you help people understand the love that many gay men have for female divas like Madonna, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Nicki, and countless others? What attracts you to them?
Julian: Well, I can’t speak for everyone, but I can definitely speak for myself. As gay men, I feel we are just more attracted to women in general because we can relate more, and they’re more accepting. I love who I am, and don’t yearn to be anyone. My love for Nicki Minaj has to do with her talent, drive, confidence, ambition. Onika is so multifaceted and she’s such a boss. The way she brands herself is so attracting . I idolize her as you may be able to tell.

Me: As someone who is known on more of the entertainment side of social media, do you fear that the young LGBT community is more interested in entertainment than social issues? Or do you think there is a healthy mix of both?
Julian: Since social media has been expanding so much over the years, I feel it has a good mixture because we are always on it so we are always updated with current issues.

Me: You seem so comfortable in your body. Is this something that has always come natural for you or something that you have developed over time?
Julian: Lord. I’m so insecure. It is difficult trying to keep up with your body, so I make sure I workout enough. I definitely had to develop being comfortable within myself. Everything in this industry is so competitive, so you have to learn to be confident within yourself if you want to win.

Me: Body image is something that many LGBT people, mostly young people, struggle with daily. What would you tell these kids to help them with their self esteem?
Julian: I would just say, do your best. Don’t give up, and don’t feel discouraged.

Me: Lastly, what’s your least favorite stereotype about gay men and why? How do you think this stereotype can be changed or possibly even disappear?
Julian: Straight men, just because we’re gay, 95 percent of the time we are not even attracted to you. Many straight guys discriminate against us or are afraid because they think we’re going to lick them right there. It has definitely got better over the years, but all we can do is stay positive and hope for a change.

Me: Thanks so much for your time Julian!
Julian: Of course. Thank you for this opportunity Autumn. Best regards 🙂
