Detroit Woman, Mary Spears, Shot And Killed For Rejecting Man’s Advances

Nope, no war on women here.

A Detroit woman was shot and killed in the east side of Detroit early last Sunday morning for rejecting the advances of another patron at the American Legion Joe Louis Post No. 375.

According to the police, the yet to be named 38-year-old suspect opened fire and killed 27-year-old Mary ?Unique? Spears on Oct. 5 for failing to give him her phone number. WDIV states that the suspect approached Spears to talk to her, but when he asked for her phone number, WJBK states that her fianc? accompanying her that night informed him that she was already engaged.

A relative of Spears recounted the suspect’s conversation with the late mother of three:

?He said, ?Can I get your name, your number.? She said, ?I have a man I can’t talk to you.??

Reports from family members indicate, however, that the suspect continued harassing Spears throughout the night.

Detroit police state that security eventually kicked the suspect out of the club through the back door, escorting him to the front of the building, but around 2 a.m. that morning, a fight broke out involving the suspect. He then allegedly pulled out a handgun and started shooting into the crowd, ultimately killing Spears.

Spears? relative witnessed the traumatic event and stated:

?He shot her one time, and she tried to run, and he shot her two more times in her head.?

Five other patrons were injured, as well. A 28-year-old and 30-year-old man, as well as a 23-, 32- and 41-year-old woman were hit by gunfire and wounded. None were mortally wounded, but two remained in the hospital as of Monday.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the suspect tried to escape after the shooting, but authorities soon apprehended him and took him into custody.

Upon hearing of the news, social media blew up with outrage over the shooting.

Spears? relatives are having a hard time coping with their recent, senseless loss. One relative stated:

?I’m scared to walk outside just because of that. I’m scared if I reject a guy, he’s going to shoot me now??

One aunt of Spears stated:

?What was on your mind that you could be so evil to kill a beautiful woman because she said no to you??

Spears had come from the funeral of another family member and stopped off at the American Legion to celebrate his life. She is survived by three young boys, ranging in age from 1 to 8 years old, and her fianc?. Donations for her burial can be made here.
