Justice Finally Served! Michael Dunn Found Guilty In The Death Of Jordan Davis

Justice was ultimately served today in Jacksonville, Florida when a jury found Michael Dunn, 47, guilty of first-degree murder of Jordan Davis.

Despite the fact that a previous jury deadlocked on the charge of first-degree murder in February, the new jury , made up of 10 white jurors and 2 black jurors, took five hours to deliberate before unanimously agreeing that Dunn was guilty.

In November of 2012, Dunn fatally shot Jordan Davis, a young black man, after a dispute?over loud rap music coming from his car. Dunn claimed self defense which brought more attention to the state of Florida’s “Stand Your Ground” laws. The shooting came only months after Trayvon Martin’s death.

Dunn claimed that the teenager pointed a shotgun at him threatening and cursing him. However, no gun was found at the scene, and no witnesses saw Davis with a gun.

Prosecutor Erin Wolfson:

?Let me be clear, there was no shotgun in that Durango that night. There was no stick. There was no branch. There was no hollow pipe. There was no weapon.?

Prosecutors used the fact that?Dunn shot at Davis multiple times and hit him three times before fleeing the scene. Davis also got out of his car and down on one knee while Dunn continued to shoot. Dunn was picked up the next day by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Dunn’s defense lawyer, Waffa J. Hanania, countered this stating a gun was never found as officers waited to investigate for four days and any gun had long been discarded. She also said that under the “Stand Your Ground” laws, Dunn was protected and justified.

Hannania:

“?He was confronted by an angry, agitated, yelling person ? a 17-year-old young man that he believed not only verbally threatened him but threatened him by his actions.”

According to CNN, Davis’ mother spoke after the verdict sharing that justice was not only served for Davis but was ?also served for “Trayvon and for all the nameless faces and children and people that will never have a voice.”
