If you haven’t been tuned in to any news channels or social media sites today, you may have missed the viral video of a 20-year-old gay student?being violently beaten by his own family for making the “choice” to be gay.

Though Daniel Ashley Pierce already came out months before, his family got together on Wednesday (Aug 27) to?confront him and hold some sort of intervention. Pierce recorded his father, stepmother, and grandparents disparaging the “choice” he was making, spouting off the “word of God,” insulting him, disowning him, and beating him in a five minute video he recorded “in case something happened.

According to The Huffington Post, Pierce’s friend took to Facebook and posted the video on Youtube. At this time (1:40 AM Aug 30), the video has been viewed 3,361,863 times.

Though this is a story that fills me with utter sadness, the open hearts of strangers?reaching out to Pierce serves as an affirmation that humanity is still doing OK. Pierce’s boyfriend set up a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of $2,000 for living expenses. The description stated that his family had kicked him out and even took his college text books.

In two days, 3,424 people have come together and raised $90,022 for Pierce.gofundme

One comment left by Linda?summed it up best:

“Your story was so heartbreaking, but has given you the chance to see the worst of people and the best. It’s awful that the “worst” comes from people who are supposed to love you unconditionally. But it helps when the “best” comes from people who don’t have to even know you to see that you deserve love and support.”

We can’t replace your family, but we stand with you Daniel. Stay strong.
