Last week, we began to mourn the loss of beloved actor Robin Williams to suicide. We were dumbfounded. How could this be? Why didn’t he talk to someone? We could have done something, anything!
But could he open up, really? Are we able to speak freely about our illnesses, especially in regards to work? Employers are understanding (usually) about physical illnesses. Employees can be open about what ails them and there’s minimal judgement cast. But mental illnesses? Not so much.
The Priory Group recently conducted a study in which they asked people to share their stories about disclosing their mental illnesses to employers. The responses are heartbreaking and revealing. You can see them below.
