If Only Real Political Campaigns Were This Honest

Meet candidate Gil Fulbright. He wants your vote in Kentucky’s hot U.S. Senate race, and he has a brilliant message?to capture your support. And what makes his?different from other political campaigns? He’s telling the truth.

?This campaign? It’s not about me. It’s about crafting a version of me that will appeal to you. [?] I’ll do anything to stay in office!?

Sadly, truth-telling Fulbright isn’t an actual candidate. He’s just a caricature that Represent Us, the creator of this video (see it below), hopes will increase public awareness of what has too much influence on the U.S. political process: money. Represent Us says:

?Politicians don’t actually say these things [that Fulbright says in his spoof ads], but in today’s political climate, this is what they’re doing. We have a critical problem in this country. Money has completely corrupted the political process. [?] We’re set out to make fixing corruption America’s Number One issue. That’s where ?Honest Gil Fulbright? comes in.?

The actual mission of Represent US is to prevent the incorrigible influence, and with promotion of a bill that would nip it in the bud. The Anti-Corruption Act calls for prohibition of special interest campaign donations, limits on Super PACs, restrictions on lobbyists, and other rules that would return representation to the people instead of donors.

The Fulbright character will crash the U.S. Senate race in Kentucky, which features incumbent Republican Mitch McConnell against Democratic nominee Alison Grimes. The national attention that contest is getting, combined with the large flow of campaign contributions the candidates are receiving, make it an ideal stage for such a performance, too.
