A 19- year- old male from Oklahoma has confessed to raping and molesting orphans?in Kenya.
Court records allegedly reveal that the perpetrator, Matthew Durham, admitted raping numerous young girls and also forced some young boys to perform oral sex on him; on occasion, he would make the other children watch while these heinous crimes took place.
Matthew was a volunteer with the Upendo Children’s home and had volunteered at an orphanage in Nairobi, Kenya four times in the past two years. It is alleged that at least one of the young victims is?HIV-positive. The children are said to be between the ages of four and nine. ?Durham could face life in prison for these sexual crimes.
The world is truly a crazy place. With all the plane crashes, Nigerian kidnappings, Israeli/Palestinian offenses, Mass/school shootings, etc, is a mystery at times how any of us remain somewhat sane. I wonder if our readers think that times are crazier than ever or do they just appear this way because of the 24/7 news cycle and the emergence of social media?
I do not propose to know the answer, but I do feel that an unnerving level of hatred is sweeping across the globe and it is frightening. We must start looking here at home. From the bigoted rhetoric many still spew about the LGBT community, to the more egregious aspects like Newtown, negativity and heartache seem way too common. ?How could one of our own do something so cruel as to volunteer at a place of such hope yet suffering, under the mask of being altruistic, and simultaneously strip them of person-hood, pride, privacy, security, and emotional comfort??I am not sure what needs to be done but the story of Matthew Durham sheds more light on just how detestable?this world can be.
