Rick Perry: ‘I’m More Jewish Than You Think I Am’

Rick Perry is a spectacle. He’s a spectacle in the state of Texas, when he’s running for president, and when he’s anywhere where there are cameras. He says dumb stuff all the time, and he seems to have a never-ending cache of more “gems.”

Recently, he did a New York Times Magazine profile and delivered a whopper. Did you know he’s Jewish? Well….no, he’s not. But here’s what he said to Mark Leibovich when the pair were together at a Jewish deli in Beverly Hills, California. From the New York Times:

?I’m more Jewish than you think I am,? he told me. ?I read the part of the Bible that said the Jews are God’s chosen people.? He boasted that he has been going to Israel since 1992. Then Perry got down to business, thanking the Lord for His many blessings, and asking Him to be with ?our men and women who defend our freedom, bring ?em home safe, be with the president, give him wisdom.?

According to Leibovich, Rick Perry still hasn’t decided if he’s going to run for president in 2016, but he’s in a self-improvement phase (yay):

He is clearly in a self-improvement phase ? doing things like attending the World Economic Forum in Davos and meeting with conservative economists and foreign-policy experts like John Taylor and George Shultz at Hoover. ?All of that makes me a better person,? Perry said.?
