Georgia Police Chief Resigns Over Texting The N-Word

A Georgia police chief has turned in his resignation Sunday. With no sentiment of denial, Police Chief Doug Jordan assumed responsibility for his use of racial slurs by turning his resignation in.

Grantville Mayor Jim Sells:

?When we approached the chief in regards to these allegations, he did not deny them and accepted some culpability.?

Police Chief Doug Jordan was originally suspended for seven days prior to an oncoming investigation after allegations were made that he sent text messages to his fellow police officers using racial slurs, ?specifically the N-word.? There will now be no investigation.

The Times-Herald:

?Grantville City Council was originally slated to discuss the reasons of the suspension and review their options in regards to Jordan during a closed session Monday evening. However, since Jordan resigned on Sunday, the matter will not be taken up since he is no longer an official city employee.?

It makes you wonder what an investigation would have turned up doesn’t it?

However, there are those who are displeased with his resignation and still want an investigation.

Councilman Johnny Cooks:

?Frankly, I’m not satisfied with a resignation. A resignation, in my opinion, means you are no longer a city employee and thereby we are no longer obligated to investigate any further details regarding the situation.?

What is also disparaging about this incident, only one officer reported the language that Police Chief Jordan used. Cook again commented, ?To me, it verifies that there are underlying issues in our police department. If someone decides that they’re going to complicitly work for someone like that, it speaks volumes.?

This was not the first time Jordan had been suspended. Last year, he was suspended for visiting Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Arizona. Apparently, city rules required him to give notification?that he was visiting Sheriff Arpaio, which he failed to do. He was suspended for one week. Jordan was quoted at the time saying:

“I plan to make a change here in Grantville, and being as tough on crime as Sheriff Arpaio is will help make the city of Grantville a safe place to live and raise a family. We are on the right track now.”

This is just a shame. It really is. It’s ok to be a police chief or a sheriff that is tough on crime. I’d prefer it. I, however, would not prefer a racist sheriff or police chief. Tough sure, but more importantly fair. It is a slight upon the image of Georgia to allow such ignorance to be in such an important position in our communities. Fortunately, he will be moving on. However, what about the officers who did not report the language? Should there be an investigation as to why only one officer reported the transgression? What do you think?
