Life after the White House may not be as cozy as one would think. In a?new interview, Hillary Clinton defended her speaking gigs — and those of Pres. Bill Clinton — by saying that they were “dead broke” after leaving the White House in 2000.
?We came out of the White House not only dead broke, but in debt,? she told?ABC News in an interview airing Monday night. ?We had no money when we got there, and we struggled to, you know, piece together the resources for mortgages, for houses, for Chelsea’s education. You know, it was not easy.?

The pair own at least two homes, one in Washington, D.C., and another in Chappaqua, N.Y., both purchased at the tail-end of their time in the White House. According to estimates by the real estate website Zillow, the Washington home is worth more than $5.4 million, while the Chappaqua home is worth almost $7 million.
Both Sec. Clinton and Pres. Bill Clinton earn approximately $200,000 each for speeches. When Sec. Clinton resigned her post as Secretary of State in 2013, CNN calculated that she had assets in the millions, with $5 million cash in the bank. She will also make money from the sale of her new book, Hard Choices.
Hillary Clinton praised her husband’s work ethic and pointed out that both of them deliver unpaid speeches to universities and charities every year.
?Bill has worked really hard?and it’s been amazing to me?he’s worked very hard,? Clinton told ABC. ?First of all, we had to pay off all our debts, which was, you know, he had to make double the money because of obviously taxes and then pay off the debts and get us houses and take care of family members.?
Meh. They may be a little out-of-touch these days, but we certainly know where their hearts are. Liberals don’t necessarily begrudge anyone wealth. We just want people to pay their fair share and give back. The Clinton family more than gives back.
