A shocking incident was captured on surveillance video in a California high school on May 19th, and now an Oakland High School security guard has been charged with felony child abuse. Marchell Mitchell was caught on camera restraining and physically abusing a disabled student at Oakland High.

The Los Angeles Times stated:

An Oakland High School security guard has been fired and charged with felony child abuse after officials said he handcuffed, punched, and then dumped a disabled student from his wheelchair in a class hallway.

It is reported that the student is disabled from cerebral palsy.

The incident seemed to arise, according to Principal Matin Abdel-Qawi, from the student not moving quickly enough to get to his classroom or refused to do so. When Mitchell took it upon himself to roll him towards his classroom, the student tried slapping him away and was handcuffed by the 23-year-old security guard. The student admitted to spitting on Mitchell which prompted him to begin punching the student several times before knocking him out of his wheelchair.

Francisco Martinez, the 17-year-old student, shared with KTVU:

I was handcuffed, so I didn’t have no way to defend myself but my mouth.

Martinez, who has been in severe pain since the incident, told Mitchell he was in pain which Mitchell ignored. According to Martinez, the guard’s response was along the lines of this:

He tells me like that I don’t give a [expletive]! I hope you don’t walk for two to three weeks.

Mitchell was immediately fired and has now been charged by the Alameda County DA’s office with corporal injury to a child which is a felony. He is expected to appear before a judge on June 16th.

To be able to write about this, this writer felt it was necessary to watch the surveillance video which is linked below. To say the least, it is absolutely shocking and disgusting to see a young man being treated in this manner, and that is not considering the fact that he is also a special-needs student. There really is no justification to what Mr. Mitchell did.
