Poll Shows Shocking Number Of Americans Unsure If People Are Born Gay

A recent Gallup poll shows that only 42% of Americans believe homosexuality is something people are born with, while 37% attribute it to “upbringing and environment.”? The numbers are alarming to many, who believe the United States has made great strides toward equality in recent years, with marriage equality slowly but surely spreading, legislatively and/ or judicially, through seventeen states.

More alarming is that these numbers show a closing of the gap from 2013, when 47% — nearly half of Americans –?believed people were born gay, while 33% believed it was related to upbringing and environment. This gap hasn’t been as close since 2011, when only 40% of Americans believed homosexuals were born gay, as opposed to the 42%, a slim majority, who believed the opposite.

The poll was conducted from May 8th through May 11th of this year, using a random sample of 1,028 adults in all 50 states, as well as in the District of Columbia. Gallup says the poll has a sampling error of plus or minus 4%.

Gallup attributes the poll’s?numbers to “a lack of input from the scientific community, which historically has not shied away from offering its opinion on lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) issues and questions.”

The scientific community has resoundingly backed the notion that some people are born with homosexuality repeatedly in the past, dispelling the myth that it is a “life choice.”

Another Gallop Poll, which was published?earlier this month, showed that support for same-sex marriages has reached a new high, with 55% supporting marriage equality, while 42% remain opposed. These numbers were only a slight improvement from 2013, when 54% were for gay marriage, while 43% were against it.
