Is Guatemala The Next Nazi Germany?

A group of Jews face violence, stoning, verbal abuse, and attempts at bombing. They also face having stones thrown at them, threats of cremation chambers, and have only 45 days to exit the town in which they’ve made their home.

Sounds like the beginning of a novel about the Holocaust, doesn’t it? It’s not. It’s happening now, and mainstream media isn’t reporting it.

Two Jewish families moved to the community of San Juan La Laguna to raise their families in the small town in Guatemala six years ago. However, in the past six months they have suffered ongoing abuse from the citizens.

Virtual Jerusalem states:

??for about six months, the community has been subject to ongoing verbal and physical abuse ? the result of a petition for the small Jewish community to be evicted.?

False propaganda was spread throughout the community to incite displeasure and restlessness amongst the citizens of San Juan La Laguna, and now officials have begun employing measures reminiscent of Nazis to push the Jewish families out including a registry recording the Jewish residents which has, in turn, led to violence.

Shalom Life stated:

The Nazi tactics that were employed on the small Jewish community occurred when the mayor ordered Jewish registry to be drawn up listing the town’s Jewish residents. The move was apparently to keep note of tourism in the small town, but the Jewis community became wary and it began a turn from incitement to anti-Semitic violence in a matter of weeks.

False information spread via the Internet incited the violence and sparked threats from citizens towards the Jewish families.

Misael Santos, a Jewish resident, shared:

They uploaded photos of [Adolf] Hitler? saying they will put us in cremation ovens. Fifteen days ago, a group of teenagers who has read the website came up to us and began throwing stones at us? The next day, the website was filled with anti-Semitic slurs and horrible pictures. Several of us wanted to flee that night, because we heard that there was talk of preparing a lynching.

They’ve also had an amateur bomb thrown at them.

Rodolfo Lopez, the mayor of San Juan La Laguna, justifies the actions of the community and has given the families only 45 days to move from the town.

Lopez:

?Everyone can denounce what [or whom] he wants and is not my job to determine if it is true or not? The people of San Juan must abide by local custom? If I go to America, I must adopt the ways of the gringo.”

The Jewish families wait meanwhile as the citizens push on with expelling them from their homes they have made in the community. The mainstream media does not report it, and I’m not very sure as to why. I was only alerted to this by a friend and only found reports of this on Jewish news outlets. With the growing anti-Semitic sentiment in Europe and worldwide, we are treading along a dangerous path of going back to one of the darkest times, the Holocaust, in modern history and repeating it all over again. With this in mind, let us stay current on this issue and let us help however we can.
