An Iowa couple alleges that a McDonald’s drive-thru served them a McDouble sandwich that was adulterated?with marijuana. Police in Ottumwa, Iowa are investigating the matter in an attempt to determine if the substance was marijuana, and if so, how it ended up on the couple’s burgers.
During the investigation the police did find drug paraphernalia on one restaurant employee, though that employee has not been charged yet. The investigation has not reached any conclusions yet as to the origin of the substance, or whether the employee found with drug paraphernalia was in any way connected to the incident. Police are still considering a range of possibilities, including the chance that the customers themselves supplied the marijuana.
Although the story itself is somewhat amusing, police are taking the allegations seriously acknowledging that planting drugs in somebody’s burger is a serious matter. In addition, they are also noting that allegations charging a business with illegally planting drugs in someone’s food is also nothing to be taken lightly.
Ottumwa?Police Lt. Jason Bell noted that his department had not?put so much focus on the contents of a cheeseburger before but he summed up the complexity of the case by stating:
We are exploring all possibilities at this point, and that factor is one thing we’re considering with the investigation.?It’s more of a serious allegation against a business in the community. In any business, we want to make sure we come to the best possible conclusion on where it originated from.
Bell also noted that a?sample of the substance on the burger was?forwarded?to the Division of Criminal Investigation for further analysis. However, results may not be available for a month. In the?mean time, one wonders if the allegations will hurt business or if it will stimulate a wave of customers trying to discover if the’secret ingredient?is going to appear in their burger.?
