Using U.S. Census data, mapsbynik put together this map that shows population density and empty space in the U.s. by Block. A Block is the smallest area unit that the Census uses to tabulate statistics.

The 2010 Census consists of a total of 11,078,300 Census Blocks.?4,871,270 of those blocks total 4.61 million square kilometers that were reported to?have no population living inside them. This result??47 percent of the U.S.?remains unoccupied.

Highlights:

  • Water areas?such as lakes, rivers, swamps, and floodplains are revealed as places where it is difficult?for people to live.
  • The mountains and deserts of the Western U.S?that are “harshest to human survival,” are very sparsely populated.
  • Wilderness protection areas, city and local parks, national and state parks, and military bases?are?areas where human settlement is largely prohibited. On the map, they show as large green tracts that are surrounded by populated countryside.
