Klansmen Set Up Neighborhood Watch In Pennsylvania Town

The Ku Klux Klan is one of the last groups most people would want setting up a neighborhood watch. Yet one Klan chapter is doing exactly that in a Pennsylvania town.

The (Harrisburg) Patriot-News reports that on Friday morning, some residents of Fairview Township–16 minutes south of Harrisburg and 25 minutes north of York–woke up to find their neighborhood plastered with flyers advertising a neighborhood watch set up by the local chapter, or “klavern,” of the Traditionalist American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. They tried to reassure area residents, “You can sleep tonight knowing the Klan is awake!”

National president and grand wizard Frank Ancona said that several people called his group’s local chapter to complain that the police weren’t doing enough to stop a rash of break-ins. Chapter leaders called Ancona, who is based in Park Hills, Missouri. Ancona gave their effort his blessing, saying that he figured Fairview Township police were just overwhelmed and needed an extra hand.

Ancona bills his organization as a kinder and gentler version of the Klan, billing his members as just regular people–including at least some law enforcement officers. He says that no one with a serious criminal record is even considered for membership. He condemned former Klan grand dragon Frasier Glenn Miller’s rampage last week at two Jewish community centers near Kansas City, saying that Miller had gone “rogue.”  At the same time, though, he makes no bones about the fact that he is, at bottom, a racist knuckledragger. For instance, in the same breath he claimed that the chapter won’t target anyone based on race, he declared, “We are an organization who looks out for our race. We believe in racial separation.” He also said that his organization considers non-Klansmen to be “aliens.” Yeah, that should make the good people of Fairview Township feel a LOT safer.
