Judson Phillips Claims Obama Won Because Of Voter Fraud

Just when you thought that the “voter fraud” meme couldn’t get more ridiculous, Judson Phillips of Tea Party Nation has taken it to a new level of insanity. In a new article, Phillips claims that based on 35,000 votes in North Carolina, Obama won a second term on the strength of as many as a million people casting votes in two states.

Where does this new math come from? Last week, the North Carolina Board of Elections found out about a program Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach developed to detect suspicious voting patterns and decided to use it to analyze votes cast in 2012. The result? Over 35,000 people who showed up at the polls in North Carolina have the same names and birthdays as people who voted in other states. When Phillips found out about this, he gushed that if that figure is extrapolated out to the entire nation, it adds up to over a million cases of double voting–which would have been enough to swing enough states to Obama to give him the win.

But oh, those carnsarn facts. Officials in Colorado and Ohio ran the same program–and found no fraudulent votes from the results generated by Kobach’s program. Additionally, North Carolina officials warn against drawing any conclusions from the report, saying any number of innocent cases could explain the discrepancy. It’s doubtful that any conclusions really can be drawn from the report, because Kobach admits that the program generates a lot of false positives. Dick Morris made a similar claim last week in The Hill and on Fox News, which Politifact rated as “False.”

But then again, tea partiers never let such things as facts get in the way of a good conspiracy theory.
