Yesterday, American Bridge 21st Century, a Democratic-leaning think tank, launched an effort to call out prominent Republicans for opposing equal pay for women. One of the first targets was former Michigan secretary of state Terri Lynn Land, who is the all-but-certain Republican nominee in the race to succeed Carl Levin in the Senate. American Bridge dug up a speech Land gave back in 2010 to a group of seniors at The Community House in Bloomfield Township, near Detroit. Land suggested that women aren’t that interested in getting the same pay as their male colleagues. To her mind, their lifestyles are so different from men that they need flexibility more than extra money in the bank. This has to be seen to be believed.
You expect to see conservative women say degrading things about their fellow women. But this has to stand as one of the most breathtaking examples of such backwards thinking that has come out in a long time. It remains to be seen whether this will have the same effect as “Debbie Spend-It-Now” did in 2012; for those who don’t remember Pete Hoekstra’s bid to unseat Debbie Stabenow essentially ended as soon as that ad hit the airwaves. But if you’re the Democratic contender, Congressman Gary Peters, you’re probably sporting a very wide smile right now.
