While this incident may be shocking to this small town in Idaho, these types of domestic violence cases are all too familiar with police and barely seem to fray the American people who have become used to these types of domestic violence events. Over the years, any fair evaluation on the issue of domestic violence will clearly show yearly increase after increase. What should give all Americans pause is the use of firearms in these said domestic cases. Guns increase the chances of serious injury and death in domestic incidents. Guns have been used to kill more and more spouses and ex-spouses in America.

A recent survey of ?female domestic violence shelter victims found more than 36.7% had been threaten or harmed with a firearm. In homes where there was a firearm present, a whopping 64.5% had used the firearm against their partner in some fashion or form(Source:Weapons in the lives of Battered Women).

With the coming election,?undoubtedly the issue of gun control will be addressed. We know that the NRA crowd has been fervently claiming that the liberals are coming for their guns. Any sane and rational mind knows that more guns are not the answer. Moreover,?empirical hard evidence and study bears this out. With that said, we also know that, ” gun-worship” is alive and well in America. We also know that there will be deep-pocketed backing for no regulations whatsoever on weapons and ammo period. The right-wing media echo chamber is abuzz with?propaganda claiming that, “?Obama wants your guns.

However, study after study, independent?studies at that, have?consistently found that having a firearm in the home greatly increases the risk for homicide in the home. While gun owners claim they keep firearms in the home for protection the findings and stats do not lie as reported in the?New England Journal of Medicine.

Despite the widely held belief that guns are effective for protection, our results suggest that they actually pose a substantial threat to members of the household. People who keep guns in their homes appear to be at greater risk of homicide in the home than people who do not. Most of this risk is due to a substantially greater risk of homicide at the hands of a family member or intimate acquaintance. We did not find evidence of a protective effect of keeping a gun in the home, even in the small subgroup of cases that involved forced entry.

In conclusion, as in this present case, illicit drugs and other addictive substances are factors to be considered. History of physical fights within the home must be evaluated. Rather than guns offering a form of protection for a home, they, in fact, are a major factor and ever-increasing reason for both homicide, suicide and accidental death by firearm within the dwelling. How many more incidents are we to endure before We The People say enough is enough.
