For Evangelical Christians like Reverend Franklin Graham, Russian Federation President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin is morally superior to President of the United States Barack Obama . Graham praises Putin for making it illegal to promote homosexuality in Russia, and gushes over how that law was enforced during the Winter Olympics in Sochi. This is proof for Graham that Putin is now the moral compass for the rest of the world.
Reverend Graham claims he’s not ignorant of Putin’s past. He understands that Putin came from humble beginnings. Putin’s grandfather cooked for Lenin. Putin’s father was an Atheist. He had a decorated career as an officer of the KGB. Franklin Graham is convinced thought that somewhere Putin felt the hand of God upon him – possibly when his father, Billy Graham, preached in Leningrad in 1984 ? Because since taking on the task of being president of Russia he embraces true morality, while the United States elects leaders who strive to recreate Sodom and Gomorrah on American soil.
Graham describes another example of Putin’s moral superiority; Putin’s support of Syrian president Bashir al Assad. Franklin Graham believes because Syria’s Christians have protection under the Syrian constitution, keeping a man in power that has indiscriminately butchered 140,000 of his own citizens in three years is the moral choice for that devastated nation. Having one family rule over a country with an iron fist for four decades, that’s real democracy.
But it was Putin’s assurance that the Sochi Olympics would be a homosexual-free zone that most impressed the reverend. In 2013 the Russian Duma passed a law that makes it illegal to promote the homosexual lifestyle in any way. The reason for this was to protect children from being victimized by gay people, because the Russian Duma and Franklin Graham believe sexual orientation is a choice. None of these people have explained how they chose to be straight.
Despite the discrimination and violence people in the Russian LGBT community suffer since this law was passed and signed by President Putin, Graham assures us it’s a good thing, because it proves President Putin is the moral leader. Here in the United States, a country that claims civil rights for everyone is a priority, protecting the rights of our citizens regardless of sexual orientation makes us godless, degenerate sinners. In the Evangelical Christian mind the world is ruled by absolutes. What once was good is now evil, and evil has become good.
