God’s own favorite Barbie doll, Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, an American who is head of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura (the Catholic Supreme Court) ?and former Archbishop of St. Louis, has been removed from the?Vatican’s important and influential Congregation for Bishops (COB). The COB vets those priests recommended for elevation by the papal ambassador in each country. After being nominated by the ambassador, or nuncio, the priest’s name is placed on a list. The Congregation for Bishops then recommends to the Pope who, from that list, they recommend for promotion. It is a very politically powerful position and one that shapes the “personality” of the College of Cardinals.
Looking at the screamingly over-the-top Bob Mackie inspired designs Prince of the Church Burke wears, and it is rather obvious why he may have lost his “favorite” status with Pope Francis. Cardinal Burke appears to be a man who thinks his train should rival that of Diana’s when she married Charles! A man who thinks “dressing down” means skipping the ermine cape in favor of the mink. In short, Cardinal Burke is the American version of the German “Bishop of bling” and things didn’t work out too well for that guy (he is on an extended “sabbatical.”) ?We can only hope this refugee from an over the top Fellini movie is soon given the same extended time of “contemplation.”
