Why Is The Black President’s Competence Always the Issue?

In a recent debate on CNN’s State of the Union former Republican Senator Rick Santorum attacked Obamacare and called into question President Barack Obama’s competence.

This really feeds into the president’s competence.? I mean that’s really the question now that people have.? Is the president competent to do his job.

Oh boy, here we go again. Is he competent?? A Harvard graduate and professor of law. The first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review. ?The author of three books. Speaks?three languages. The first president,?Democrat or Republican,?since Dwight Eisenhower to win more than 50 percent of the popular vote twice.? ?A Nobel?laureate, Grammy award winner, just to name a few.

Disclaimer: I am by no means a fanatic, faithfully blind supporter of the President.?I don’t think he walks on water. I don’t think he is the end all to be all nor do I think he is the best thing since sliced cheese. In fact I wish he were far more progressive and when you actually analyze many of his policies he is, as quiet as it is kept, far from the liberal, pot smoking, fist pumping, socialist the far right loves to portray him as.

But whatever issues or doubts I may have concerning our 44th and first African-American president none, I repeat none have to do with his competency or lack thereof. Why? Because the harsh and unfortunate reality that mainstream America hates to acknowledge, that most African-Americans will not deny, is Affirmative Action does not by any means level the playing field. We still have to be ten times as qualified as our white counterparts just to get recognized. The social construct of American professionalism just doesn’t allow for mediocre Black folk.

We don’t become presidential contenders not knowing the names of the leaders of key nations. We don’t make it to the big leagues not having a basic knowledge of geography. We don’t make it mainstream without being able to articulate in the most finest of the English vernacular our stance on foreign and?economic policy. And we most definitely do not become the leader of the free world without being able to construct a sentence with?agreement between the’subject and predicate.

So, as Howard Dean stated, “enough of this nonsense.” President Obama may be many things but what he ain’t is incompetent…..by a long shot.
