The Truth Concerning Sodom And Gomorrah — Hint: It’s Not About Gays

There has been a lot of legislation that has been used to block the rights of the LGBQT community, endorsed by many conservative Christians. They say that this country is a Christian country and we must be a Christian country, or end up like Sodom and Gomorrah. But here is the truth of Sodom and Gomorrah, per the Bible.

The Truth Concerning Sodom and Gomorrah.

According to Ezekiel chapter 16, Ezekiel had to confront Jerusalem for turning away from God and instead focusing on other gods and themselves. The people in Jerusalem were going completely against God and the teachings from Moses, sacrificing their children in the forms, most likely, of blood sacrifices and also sexual sacrifices. God declares the anger that is present against Jerusalem for several verses; and then, interestingly enough, there is something then mentioned concerning Sodom and Gomorrah, primarily Sodom. In verses 49 and 50, it says,

???Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.”

God was angered by the way their children were sacrificed and how the poor were treated, along with the worship of other gods in Sodom and Gomorrah. It was not homosexuality, but other things that ultimately destroyed these two cities. The things that our country is doing now; ignoring the poor and needy, being haughty and arrogant, and worshiping money and greed. If they are so concerned about not being like Sodom and Gomorrah, then they need to focus on more things than what they are.

Does Faith Have to be Sacrificed for Compassion?

John Shore has a lovely article that answers this in great detail. As Mr. Shore points out, no, you do not. And I agree but would go even further with it by saying that we need? to fully practice compassionate works to show our faith.

As it stands in the Bible, this is sound advice. Why? Because, as stated in James 2:26, “Faith without works is dead,”

And works of faith include social justices being advocated for, not just giving to the poor. Works of faith mean reaching out to the hurt that need healing, and a number of different things. It’s not just one thing.

So, in the End…

The things that should be important to you are this:

  • Compassion for your fellow humans and other occupants of this planet.
  • Truth being sought
  • Justice achieved.
  • Loving your neighbor as yourself
  • Not judging others.
  • Living your own life.

It is none of your business what someone else does in their own life, who they love or what they do with their own bodies, regardless of your faith. It is not your place to shove your beliefs down another person’s throat just because you are so concerned about us having the appearance of a Christian nation, when we simply are not. Focus more on social justices and show more compassion. Live your own life and don’t worry about what your neighbors are doing.
