Maher Calls Out ‘Thunderously Wrong’ Roberts-Led SCOTUS

Friday night, during his “New Rules” segment on Real Time with Bill Maher, the host took aim at the Chief Justice John Roberts and the damage his court has done to the U.S.

Maher singled out the Citizen’s United and Voting Rights Act rulings as instances when Roberts and other conservative justices said everything would be fine yet the outcome has shown that not to be true. Maher stated:

Chief Justice John Roberts and the conservatives on the court changed the law and promised us no bad would come of it, and bad came of it almost immediately.

Within 48 hours of the Voting Rights Act ruling?Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, South Carolina, and Virginia all moved forward with enacting voting restrictions that will disenfranchise minority voters and voters likely to vote for Democrats. Maher said:

The Court was proved thunderously wrong in less time than it takes Miley Cyrus to get dressed.

The same thing happened with the?Citizens United?ruling. The decision made it possible for corporations and big businesses and mega-wealthy individuals to exercise undue influence over elections by pouring in their money.

Maher goes on to say this problem comes from conservatives being sentimental and wishing for an idealized America. One might say that those of us who study history know that?has never existed. Maher continued by saying:

That is the problem with today’s conservatives. They are too sentimental about how wonderful America is. Racism? That’s over. Monied interests? They couldn’t corrupt us if they tried!

With these two rulings the Roberts court have made a huge impact on the electoral process that we have yet to fully see the effect of. See video below.
