Boy Suspended Indefinitely For Wearing A Purse

Now, not only are we allowing schools to prohibit free speech, only certain children are allowed to carry purses or bags, specifically only females. Recently, a 13-year-old, eighth grade student at Anderson Country Senior-Junior School in Garnett, Kansas, was suspended because he refused to take off his Vera Bradley purse.

According to Skylar Davis, who had worn the purse all year without issue just like many of the female students in his school, was called to Principal Don Hillard’s office and told to remove the purse. After refusing to do so, Skylar was suspended indefinitely. Talking to reporter Dave Jorden from KCTV5, Skylar stated the situation as this:

I went to the office and I refused to take it off, and they suspended me.

When his mother was reached to pick up her child she asked what the issue was and the school explained that he was being suspended for not removing his purse and that was it. Enraged, Skylar’s mother combed through the student handbook but found nothing that mentioned bags or purses, which brings question to the Principal’s motives for his suspension of this male student but none of the female students at the school.

Sylar feels this situation is completely unfair and stated:

I don’t think everyone should be treated differently. Everyone should have the same privileges.

So far Principal Hillard has refused to let Skylar back into school until he stops wearing the purse; something Skylar is not willing to do. So far the school has made no comment toward the situation.
