Tales of President Obama’s gay marriage evolution may be exaggerated

Apparently, President Barack Obama didn’t actually ?evolve? on gay marriage, according to a new book about the 2012 presidential campaign, the Huffington Post reports.

The authors also write in an earlier section of the book that many believed that Obama was in favor of gay marriage all along, and former press secretary Robert Gibbs had heard him say so in 2004.

Even so, Double Down authors Mark Halperin and John Heilemann said Obama fully embraced his ?evolution.? Halperin and Heilemann’s book was released Tuesday. They also co-authored Game Change, which chronicled the 2008 McCain-Pailin campaign. He said:

I feel so good about that.

That’s among the gems, which comes from Double Down. Authors Mark Halperin and John Heilemann’s work was released Tuesday. Halperin and Heilemann penned Game Change, which chronicled the failed McCain-Palin 2008 presidential campaign.

The book also claims Vice President Joe Biden’s vocal gay marriage support nearly cost him his job after stealing the president’s thunder during a ?Meet The Press? interview.

I am the vice president of the United States of America; the president sets the policy. I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women, and heterosexual men and women marrying one another are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties.

However, the campaign staff just might deserve some of the blame, according to the book. It supposedly prepped Biden on nearly every campaign issue?except gay marriage. Saying adviser David Plouffe wasn’t pleased is an understatement.

WHAT THE F***?We were going to do this! In the next two weeks! As a f***ing surprise! HOW CAN THIS HAVE HAPPENED?!

With that said, Halperin and Heilemann paint Biden as an unlikely gay ally. They claim Biden had no gaydar. However, a fundraising event at the Los Angeles home of a gay couple with children inspired him to embrace marriage equality.
