This is sad news on the last day of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. There was hope State Attorney Angela Corey would drop the case against domestic violence victim, Marissa Alexander. Corey was the prosecuting attorney in Marissa’s first trial, as well as the prosecuting attorney in George Zimmerman’s trial. Zimmerman walked out of court free, and Marissa was sentenced to prison for 20 years. One has to wonder about Angela Corey’s agenda.

During the Jacksonville hearing Thursday morning, Florida courts opted to put Marissa Alexander through a whole new trial, now scheduled for March 31, 2014. It has not yet been determined whether Alexander will be allowed to live outside of prison walls while awaiting the trial. A bail hearing is scheduled for next week, November 8. Marissa has?been away from her children for almost three years.

Alexander was originally sentenced to 20 years for firing a warning shot in self-defense to keep her abusive husband, Rico Grey, from attacking her (again). Had Alexander killed Gray under Florida’s Stand Your Ground Law, she would have walked free. Instead, Alexander harmed no one and went to prison. Gray admitted he would have hurt Alexander again had she not fired the shot, and said he felt Alexander did the right thing. In the same deposition, Gray also stated Marissa did not aim the gun at him. He is a self-admitted perpetrator. There are police, court, and hospital records, as well as statements by witnesses of his abuse, on public file. Rico Gray changed his entire story during the trial. He became the ‘victim,’ and left the courtroom a free man.

With a massive and growing Free Marissa Now campaign, and a fresh group of lawyers, Marissa Alexander’s original sentence of 20 years was repealed and a new trial was ‘awarded’ to Alexander in September. The protesters are understandably disappointed Marissa Alexander’s case was not dropped altogether, yet hopeful she will be released on bond next week, to be with her children while awaiting her new trial. The incident and arrest occurred just days after giving birth to her daughter.

We will report the back on November 8 to relay the status of Alexander’s bail trial.?For more stories, information and links regarding Marissa Alexander’s case. Visit: Liberals Unite Marissa Alexander /Leslie Salzillo Archives

Special thanks to?Katie Halper?for posting the story on AlterNet back in June. After reading about Marissa’s case, I’ve not been able to let it go, and have promised myself I will continue covering it, until Marissa Alexander is free.
