Taking Away Deaf Housing Because They’re Deaf?

There are millions of people, in the United States alone, who are either severely hearing impaired or profoundly deaf. The assistance for this type of disability is expensive and very hard to come by. Thousands of these people live in silent, lonely confounds because assistive devices are just non-existent for those w aren’t wealthy or just plain lucky.

Here’s an idea, to compound this problem, let’s spend over 2 million dollars developing and constructing an apartment complex that is equipped with lights for the doorbell and alarm, wheel chair accessibility, and video phones so the residents can communicate?.and then give it to the non-disabled.

This is exactly what happened in Tempe, Arizona where a state of the art facility was built to cater to the needs of the hard of hearing and deaf society.

HUD, Housing and Urban Development, spent $2.6 million dollars building the complex that houses several hundred deaf and hard of hearing residents. Now, the same agency that built it is claiming the complex is discriminating against hearing individuals and is demanding that 75% of the units be rented to those without disability. Senator Jake Flake commented on the situation saying:

To basically say there are too many disabled people here is just nuts.

Despite that fact, and the fact that the building was originally built for the deaf and hard of hearing, HUD’s powerful attorneys are attacking this facility right and left.

Being deaf myself, having a facility, which I pay rent in, that accommodates my hearing impairment needs sounds amazing. To be told I don’t get an apartment there because they have to reach a quota of non-disabled people would enrage me, and well just has. What’s next? Demanding we sell 75% of our hearing aids to people without hearing problems?

Get your act together HUD, we may not be able to hear, but we see exactly what you are doing.
