Michael Cole To Challenge Rep. Steve Stockman In TX 36th

Democrat Michael Cole officially announced that he would be challenging Incumbent Republican Congressman Steve Stockman in Texas’ 36th District, today at the Orange County Court House. Citing the theme “It is time that we come together again,” ?Cole’s post-partisan message contrasts sharply with the divisive fiercely partisan tone of the congressman he will face. Stockman is known for his intemperate rhetoric and for engaging in fiercely partisan attempts to undermine President Obama, including frequent calls to bring forth articles of impeachment on the flimsiest of pretexts.

Calling for unity, Cole stressed important issues, including infrastructure development, economic security, and healthcare funding. He emphasized our collective interdependence noting that:

“No matter what label we wear, Democrat or Republican, Liberal or Conservative, we share a love for this nation. At the end of the day we are community. In times of crisis and in the face of adversity, we come together.”

Building upon that need for one another, he called for investing in his district’s infrastructure. In particular, he mentioned the area’s susceptibility to devastating tropical storms, and he called for preparedness before the next storm, as well as citing the need for other infrastructure improvements, stating:

“I want to invest in our infrastructure, we must expand our ports, build up our railroads, expand our internet, repair our aging bridges and roads. By investing in infrastructure we give industry the foundation to grow and to thrive.

It is my goal to build up our protective levees and damns. The cost of preparation for the next massive hurricane is small compared to the costs of the cleanup after another Ike or Rita. We do not just want the insurance protection for after the storm; we want assurance that South East Texas properties and lives are safe.”

Cole also called for preserving Social Security, and for addressing poverty and unemployment. Cole’s message clearly is one that should resonate with residents of Southeast Texas, and it contrasts sharply with Republican Steve Stockman’s mean-spirited and divisive rhetoric and his disastrous policy decisions. With the election just a little over a year away, Democrat Michael Cole offers a more inclusive vision and a better direction than the reactionary, self-serving politics championed by Steve Stockman.
