If Russia’s Latest Anti-Gay Law Passes, Masha Gessen Loses Her Kids (VIDEO)

Masha Gessen, a journalist and out lesbian mom, told MSNBC’s Chris Haye’s she may lose her three children if a proposed law in anti-gay Russia passes

Discrimination against LGBT Russians could devolve even more,?SheWired.com?reports. Russian journalist and out lesbian Masha Gessen appeared on MSNBC’s All In With Chris Hayes Thursday. Gessen told Hayes about living in a Russia that is devoted to tormenting gays and lesbians.

The mother of three said losing her children could become a consequence of staying in her homeland. Proposed legislation, which would allow removing children from any gay or lesbian household, exists, according to Gessen. If approved, both adopted and biological children could be torn from their parents’ arms.

Masha Gessen states:

Things have gotten significantly worse. I mean, Russia was never a gay paradise, same-sex marriage was not on the agenda, but Russia was moving in the right direction ? [But] in the last year and a half, it’s been moving backwards. It has been moving back, not only toward extreme homophobia, but this hate campaign has caused extreme violence.

Gessen believes her family would have a collective target on its back. She’s prepared to move to New York. Masha Gessen has also championed efforts like boycotting Russian vodka and holding demonstrations during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. She believes highlighting Russia’s human rights abuses is just what the doctor ordered.

According to Gessen:

The reason that Russia has done as much, as fast, as hatefully, as violently, is because it felt like nobody was watching.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Kremlin’s crackdown on LGBT citizens began with a ?gay propaganda? law. PolicyMic?outlines Russia’s efforts to torment its LGBT citizens:

On?June 30?this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed into law a bill banning the ‘propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations to minors,’ thus opening a new, dark chapter in the history of gay rights in Russia. The law caps a period of ferocious activities by the Russian government aimed at limiting the rights of the country’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex people.
