WWE star Darren Young comes out as gay, and we’re surprised this buff hottie – who dons costumes and wrestles guys half-naked – plays for the other team?
When this unnamed cameraman from TMZ waited by LAX’s baggage claim to interview World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. (WWE) wrestling star Darren Young, he surely had no idea he was about to land the interview of a lifetime.
Or, perhaps, this moment was yet another one of the pro-wrestling world’s flamboyantly scripted publicity stunts. Either way, the following exchange — from last week on August 15 — surely stunned and amazed its viewers. TMZ lobbed the following loaded question literally?straight out of the (airport) gate:
Do you think, like, a gay wrestler could be successful within the WWE?
Young chuckled and breezily responded:
Absolutely. Look at me. I’m a WWE superstar and to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now, I’m gay. And I’m happy. I’m very happy.”
Here’s the video from TMZ:
A WWE representative told the Huffington Post:
WWE is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and we will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar. Today, in fact, Darren will be participating in one of our Be A Star anti-bullying rallies in Los Angeles to teach children how to create positive environments for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation.
So, why has Young — who joined the WWE in 2005 and entered the world of professional wrestling in 2002 — chosen this particular moment to come out of the closet? In yet another dramatic exclusive, Young told TMZ Sports,
I came out because I’m in love!
And sure enough, the article featured a photo with Young and his boyfriend, Nick. Because, if there’s anything better than looking at a hottie like Young, it’s looking at two hotties.
These endorsements from the notoriously macho pro-wrestling circuit mark an important milestone in the march towards equal rights for the LGBT community. Amazingly enough — despite all the costumed, greased-up, half-naked, super-buff guys twining and grunting against each other in Kama Sutra-like wrestling holds — homosexuality in wrestling has pretty much stayed on the down-low. Young’s coming out as gay will change that.
