Pres. George H.W. Bush Shaves Head For Solidarity With Staffer’s Child

Former President George H.W. Bush shaved his head on Tuesday to show support for a two-year-old leukemia victim. The 89-year-old former leader joined members of the Bush Protective Division who began removing their own hair last week. The child, Patrick (only his first name was shared), is the son of a member of President Bush’s Secret Service detail.

According to Bush spokesperson Jim McGrath, Patrick was diagnosed with leukemia last spring and his prognosis is good. The Secret Service team has also organized a website and 50-mile motorcycle ride to help pay for Patrick’s medical bills. The inaugural Patrick’s Pals Motorcycle Benefit Run will begin near President Bush’s summer home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

Pres. Bush’s personal interest in a child who has leukemia probably isn’t random. He and his wife, Barbara Bush, lost a three-year-old daughter, Robin Bush, to the same disease in 1953.
